During his reign, William the Conqueror abolished the death penalty, replacing it with having your eyes gouged out.
When he died, he was stuffed into a coffin that was too small for him. All his weapons gold, silver, clothes and furniture was stolen by his servants. The church was set on fire and William I’s stomach exploded, as well as one of his arms which fell off. Not a very regal ceremony.
