Every year the Royal Albert Hall lights up for the Proms (or the BBC Proms). Although promenade concerts existed in London’s pleasure gardens since the 1850s, it wasn’t until 1895 that Robert Newman arranged the first series of indoor promenade concerts in the Queen’s Hall in Langham Place. The intention was to introduce people who would not necessarily attend a classical concert, thanks to low ticket prices and informal atmosphere.
