Take a Step Back in Time

"History is not just found in textbooks. It is the foundation of everything we know." - Victoria Brown

This is one of the most iconic images of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Tommie Smith and John Carlos used a number of motifs to represent black solidarity and the emancipation/civil rights movement. Most notably of all is the one black glove, but they also wore no shoes, just black socks. Smith wore a black scarf and Carlos wore his tracksuit unzipped to show solidarity with blue collar workers. Silver medalist Peter Norman was criticised for supporting this protest. At his funeral, his coffin was carried by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.
